What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. (John 2:11 NIV)

In the mid-80’s my parents owned an Oldsmobile Cutlass which I drove relentlessly. It wasn’t a stylish ride, and it didn’t have a ton of power which is why I called it the Olds “Gutless,” but it had a decent stereo which is the most important thing for a teenager and served its transportation purposes. One of the features of this car was that it had no gauges other than the one for fuel. If something went wrong with the car, such as overheating, a light would come on to indicate something was going on.

When John wrote his account of Jesus’ life, his purpose in writing was to convince his readers to believe that Jesus was indeed the Son of God and that by believing in Him we would have life through His name (John 20:31). Unique among the gospel writers, John focuses on targeted, specific days and events in the life of Jesus where things happened that gave indication that God was doing something unique in the world. Signs, or “indicators” were recorded with breathtaking detail that moved people toward belief in Jesus.

When Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding party in Cana, the light came on for the disciples and as the verse said, they believed in Him. They saw “indication” of the glory of God through Jesus.

Here’s the question of the day to ponder: Where are the indicator lights in 2013?

Jesus told us that we are the light of the world and also that signs (indicators) would follow those who believe (Mark 16). Is that happening in our world? What things are happening in our lives and in our churches that are giving indication that God has done something unique through Jesus and people can still find life through His name? Pray in 2013 that these indicators show up in a variety of ways and reveal the glory of God.
